This course will critically examine the burgeoning theoretical
literature on terrorism and political violence. It will focus on the
formation of terror networks, the motivations of suicide terrorists,
the religious and ideological bases of terrorism and state responses
to terror. To that end it will draw on a range of competing
theoretical perspectives that seek to explain this social and
political phenomenon. All students will be expected to write a
substantial term paper with a significant theoretical corpus.
