This course examines the history and development of African American
religions in the U.S. from the colonial period to the present. Of
particular interest are problems of slavery, coloniality, and rac
[ial]ism as reflected in the historical development of African
American religions. The course also highlights the problems of
method encountered in studying black religion in the United States.
African American religions comprise a number of different religious
types and sensibilities. For this reason, the varieties of African
American religious experience will be emphasized--Islam, Vodun,
Yoruba, humanism, Christianity, new urban religions.
