This course is designed to take us away from our personal and private
views and experiences of families and examine the family as a dynamic
social institution. Throughout the course we will examine broad
social patterns and changes as they relate to contemporary families.
We will examine common-sense knowledge from a more inquisitive and
critical vantage point. Through this course you will develop a
greater understanding of the diversity of family forms and the ways I
which families are impacted by larger social forces. You will move
beyond the individual level, which tends to view family troubles as
personal issues, to the social level to look at the ways in which
family troubles have underlying social causes.
