G603 | 14133 | Paul Gutjahr

(4 cr. hrs.)
This course will provide an introduction to the history,
methodologies, and some of the key theoretical frameworks employed
by American Studies scholars over the past sixty years. A key
component of the course will be exploring the vexed nature of doing
interdisciplinary scholarship. The historical topic coverage will be
broad, ranging from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries.
Through weekly discussions and readings, we will examine important
approaches in the field including: material culture, globalization,
race, mass culture, architecture, public policy, religion, visual
media, and political transformation. Along with the reading, a
number of shorter writing assignments and a final ten to fifteen
page paper will be required.
