This course will focus on the major cultural and political
transformations that shaped life and national identity in twentieth
century America.  Particular attention will be paid to the tension
between liberal and conservative forms of national identity, mattes
of race, gender, immigration and class, the impact of film and mass
culture, the realities and legacy of war and the problem of cultural
memory.  This is a seminar and, consequently, students will be asked
to develop a research paper in discussions with the instructor.
Weekly meetings will read and discuss relevant literature and
student research projects.
