This course is designed to introduce graduate students to major issues
in the history of social and cultural anthropology from the
mid-nineteenth century until the 1960s. Readings trace the
development of major theoretical and methodological approaches in the
field and include both original texts and historical studies.
Particular attention is paid to the development of anthropology in
North America and the influences on it of British and French
anthropology. Grades are based on class participation and on three
written assignments dealing with bibliography, biography, and theory.
