H750:  Twentieth Century America:  This is a seminar and as such it
will focus on the preparation of a research paper. Students will
meet weekly to read about major issues in twentieth century American
culture and politics and design a research project in conjunction
with the professor.  Major topics discussed will include the rise
and fall of liberalism, the rise of the Right, race, class, and
gender, war and society, the effects of mass culture on American
politics and life, and the emergence of cultural memory.   Some
attention will also be given to the conceptual approaches to
research in this area.    For a list of some of the readings, please
