This course will examine the twentieth-century struggle of African-
Americans to secure civil and human rights in the United States. It
will survey the pre-World War II tradition of black protest and
leadership, but will be most concerned with the civil rights
campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s. Among the issues discussed will
be the impact of gender on the Civil Rights Movement, the
effectiveness of government policies, leadership styles and protest
strategies, the challenge of black nationalism, and the contemporary
legacies of the Civil Rights Movement.
