This course examines the history of African American religions from
the colonial period to the present.  Of particular interest to our
study will be the problems of slavery and colonialism, race, and
modernity.  The course will also highlight the problems of
historiography and method encountered in studying African American
religions.  Emphasizes the varieties of religious types and
expressions that constitute African American religions, including
Islam, Vodun, and Yoruba.  Assigned readings include theories of
race, gender, trans-nationalism, and postcolonialism.
