Encountering Worldwide Performing Arts
Each week a video-recording of a work from the international
performing arts repertoire (sometimes more than one, sometimes
excerpts only) will be followed by a class on the work shown and its
performance-context. Beside core (but often less familiar) works
from the standard repertoire--drama, opera, ballet, and modern dance-
-we shall look at the differing characteristics of non-Western
performance, including examples from India, Japan, China, and
Indonesia.

There will be film of live performance, as well as studio recordings
and performance documentaries, exemplifying popular traditions as
well as the so-called "high arts".

Students will periodically write their own critiques of the works
themselves, and the varying conditions of performance.
