Classical Studies | Survey of Greek Literature
G536 | 26700 | Goh, M

Greek 536

G536 is a survey of the history of Greek poetry from Homer to the
imperial period. (Greek prose will be covered in the second
semester).

The aim of the course is to deepen the students' familiarity with
the major works of Greek literature and to situate them in relation
to one another. We will combine close reading and discussion of
select excerpts in Greek with broader consideration of genre, style,
meter, and the cultural context of individual authors. As we proceed
chronologically, students are encouraged to fill in gaps in their
knowledge of Greek literature, learning and thinking about both
traditional and new interpretations. Course requirements are two
exams and two book reviews.
