In this course, students are asked to examine public space, the communities which inhabit it
and their own agency within that space in relation to communication design. Students are
introduced to current design theory around the issues of community and the role of the
communication designer. Lectures will introduce key thinkers and concepts in this area.
Students will also participate in a project-based component in groups where they will locate
an opportunity for the development of a communication design outcome that engages and
develops their chosen public space and the people who use it. The emphasis is on examining
communication design as an activity that can facilitate communities and provide frameworks
for the development and invigoration of networks for community expression within public
space.
