This course will survey through the linguistic structure of Korean
language by analyzing Korean data provided by the instructor. The
Korean data provided will include authentic as well as made up
sentences and discourse. The topics dealt with are: word order,
basic sentence structures, semantics (meaning) and pragmatics (use
in communication) of noun-particles, clause connectors, and sentence-
final modal suffixes, as well as the temporal system, causatives and
passives, conversational styles, speech styles and honorifics.
Particularly focused are a typologically comparative perspective and
a function-oriented perspective rather than formal structures.
Students are required to give analyses of the Korean data provided
by the instructor and write a number of analysis papers –graduate
students are required to write a term paper at the end of the
semester.

Background and/or experience with Korean language is not required.
Familiarity with linguistic description is recommended.
