TOPIC: “The Changing Male Image”

The intention of this course is to improve writing skills through
discussion and analysis of a single topic, the changing male
image. It will explore the concepts of masculinity occurring over
the last century, drawing from a class reader with selections from
literature and from historical, sociological, and psychological
narratives. The more specific topics in which masculinity figures
in this period include World Wars I and II, the changes in styles
and behaviors associated with the decades from the 1950’s through
the 1980’s, the influence of subcultures, and the women’s movement.
Video and film clips and music will supplement these sources of
icons of masculinity.

In addition to studying these materials, students will conduct
personal investigation and research. Taking all these resources
together, they will discover both the continuities and the changes
in the idea of what it means to be masculine. And they will use
these materials and ideas to write three formal analyses, one of
which will be developed by means of conferencing.
