Fine Arts | Authenticity in African Art, Traditional and Modern (Problems in African Art
A650 | 16287 | Pelrine

This seminar will explore the development of ideas about what
constitutes "authentic" African art. We will begin with the masks
and figures that became popular in early 20th century Europe and
continue into the present to investigate how these ideas have
influenced and affected the reception of work by contemporary
African artists working in a variety of media during the late 20th
and early 21st centuries.

We will examine both theoretical and practical issues, looking at
how people have written about the topic as well as considerations
that have shaped gallery and museum exhibitions.
