Folklore | Cultural Diversity in China

This course introduces students to the cultural and human diversity
in contemporary China. Diversity will be explored in relation to
ethnic, linguistic, geographic, class, and generational groups. We
will explore the multiple meanings of Chineseness and concepts of
individual and group identities as well as cultural, artistic, and
linguistic policies within the Peoples Republic of China. Much of
the course will focus on the role of the arts and other expressive
forms in promoting and shaping identities. This course is cross-
listed in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
