Topic: The City of Moving Images

This course will examine not only the ways in which films construct
urban environments but also the extent to which the institution of
cinema has relied upon cities and urban populations throughout its
development. From early experiments with location shooting to Weimar
street films, metropolitan fantasies, the film noir classics of exile
directors, and the oeuvre of Wim Wenders, German and Austrian
filmmakers have sought new ways to express the urban experience.
While focusing primarily on the German tradition, we will also
consider the cinematic city in a number of manifestations in popular
world cinema and new media.

In addition to written work, students will be asked to contribute
their own 5-minute ‘city films’ at the end of the semester.

Texts will be available from the course website.
