Gender Studies | Problems in Gender Studies: Gender & TV
G402 | 15234 | Maher, J

This class is an introduction to the field of Television Studies
that focuses on issues of gender and representation. Through a
variety of theoretical perspectives, we will explore modes of
analyses—for example, audience studies, psychoanalytic theory,
British cultural studies—and how specific television genres such as
crime shows, soap operas and reality television represent gender as
it intersects with race, class and sexuality. By critically reading
the most “mass” of “mass mediums,” we’ll investigate how television
structures, reflects, and sometimes challenges our ideas and beliefs
about gender and gender norms.

NOTE: Some of the material we will be covering in the class may be
of a strong sexual nature. Please make sure that this isn’t a
problem for you if you want to stay in this class.
