HISP –S 331 The Hispanic World I (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S310 or equivalent
Credit given for only two of the following: S331, S332, S333
This course provides an introduction to Latin American literature
and the analysis of cultural texts. In particular, it focuses on
something that you probably already take for granted: reading.
During the semester, we will learn how to read both critically and
creatively, analyzing the strategies that different authors use to
express their ideas, create their literary and filmic worlds, and
engage the reader. As an introduction to literature, the class will
familiarize you with the basic tools for the analysis of film and
three literary genres: narrative, poetry, and drama. We will
question the limits of textual interpretation (is any interpretation
of a text valid?) and work towards producing readings that are
creative, insightful and grounded. The course will also focus,
therefore, on techniques of argumentative writing in Spanish and the
building of your textual interpretation in composition form.
The course will most likely include texts by Jorge Luis Borges, Maya
Chávez Dean, Julio Cortázar, Ariel Dorfman, Rosario Ferré, Gabriel
García Márquez, Nicolás Guillén, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Vicente
Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, Cristina Peri Rossi, Juan Rulfo, Luz María
Umpierre, and César Vallejo.
Course evaluation will be based on a combination of short writing
assignments, presentations, exams, and class participation. Class
discussions and assignments in Spanish.
