HISP-S 332 Hispanic World II (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S331 or equivalent
Credit given for only two of the following: S331, S332, S333
This course will deal with different aspects of the relationship
between the individual and society in a number of representative
Spanish literary works from the Middle Age, Golden Age, and modern
times. Readings include a novel (Valera’s PEPITA JIMENEZ), a
dramatic work (Tirso de Molina’s EL BURLADOR DE SEVILLA), and a
selection of poems and essays. In our close reading of these works
we will give special attention to:
1. The historical and cultural context in which they were written:
2. The social milieux and the ethical and esthetic values they
reflect;
3. The main frames of thought and generic features they contain;
4. The literary trends to which they belong;
5. Pertinent questions of literary theory and interpretation.
Thus, the specific aim of the course is on the one hand to sharpen
the literary insight and widen the cultural horizons of the students
and on the other to improve their comprehension, speaking and
writing abilities in Spanish. S332 will be taught in Spanish.
Class attendance is mandatory. Students will be evaluated on the
basis of their participation in class, written assignments, and two
exams.
