HISP-S 471 Spanish American Literature 1 (3 credits) LITERATURE
Prerequisite: S331 and S332 or equivalent

This course will survey Spanish American literature from the 16th to
the end of the 19th centuries, with a focus on texts of many genres,
including poetry, novel, short story, essay, epistolary writing and
other historical documents. Throughout the course, we will explore
the complex and often unexpected interrelations between rhetoric and
narrative, between literary and other ideological modes, and between
text and context, as we develop a sense of the chronological
development of Hispanic writing during this time period. Students
will acquire a historical and literary background that will enable
them to approach with greater nuance the complexities of
contemporary Hispanic American literature and culture.
