HISP-S 418 Hispanic Drama (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S331 and S332 or equivalent.

We will study representative plays from the Spanish Golden Age, the
Romantic and the modern periods. The theme of Don Juan will be of
special interest. In addition to examining the plays as literary
texts (poetics) we will see them as spectacle (dramatics) and place
them in their historical context. We will do some classroom staging
as our resources allow.

Grades will be based on three short (2-3 pages) papers, midterm and
final exams, and class participation.

Plays to be read:
Tirso de Molina, EL BURLADOR DE SEVILLA
Pedro Calderón de la Barca, EL MEDICO DE SU HONRA
José Zorrilla, DON JUAN TENORIO
Ventura de la Vega, EL HOMBRE DE MUNDO
Ramón del Valle-Inclán, LA MARQUESA ROSALINDA
Antonio Buero-Vallejo, EL SUENO DE LA RAZON
Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, TESTAMENT
