The course is a graduate level introduction to syntactic theory and
analysis, conducted from the minimalist perspective and primarily
based on English data. Emphasis is placed on constructing and
evaluating grammatical analyses and on promoting a critical
understanding of the underlying assumptions of the generative
gramework as it has developed in recent work in syntactic theory.
Major areas of inquiry are: phrase structure, empty categories, case
theory, movement, functional categories, and anaphora.
