L714 Seminar in Syntax
On the correlation between sounds and meanings
T/R 4-5:15, SY 137 (#10861), Instructor: Yoshihisa Kitagawa
The course will examine both synchronization and desynchronization
of LFs and PFs, and investigate how grammar should capture them.
Tentative course plan:
[1] Logical and physical prominence:
Prosody-information correlations involved in the prominence at the
phrasal level, at the clausal level, and due to focusing will be
closely examined and how such correlations can be established in the
grammar will be explored.
[2] Morphology and Logical syntax:
Abstract syntactic analyses will be explored for various morpho-
syntactic phenomena observed in a variety of languages:
Target phenomena may include: passive, causative, VP ellipsis,
verbal inflection, nominalization, light verb construction, and
focus particles
Target languages may include: Japanese, English, also Welsh, Dutch,
French, Lithuanian, Korean and Turkish
Time permitting:
[3] Physical syntax:
Syntactic derivations influencing "PF-relevant properties" are
closely re-examined, and the role of overt movement, case marking,
agreement, and prosodic marking will be reconsidered.
