Y657 | 17625 | Fierman

Meets with CEUS U-596

This course will examine the issues of transition which have arisen
in the former Central Asian republics as a result of the collapse of
the USSR. Weekly sessions will be devoted to individual problem
areas, such as the political relations with Russia, the development
of foreign policy with the "far abroad," and the war in Tajikistan.
Other sessions will cover demographic development, language policy,
problems of economic reform, creation of new political structures,
and environmental issues. In addition to a major research paper,
students will write weekly "reactions" to reading selections and
submit them before class.
