The above course carries Arts and Humanities Distribution and is a
2nd 8 wk class.
Confucianism is an East Asian tradition that dates back at least to
the time of Confucius, 2,500 years ago. Tu Wei-ming, a contemporary
Confucian, describes it as “a worldview, a social ethic, a political
ideology, a scholarly tradition, and a way of life.” It has
profoundly influenced the cultural and religious histories of China,
Korea, and Japan, and today is enjoying a nascent renaissance in the
land of its birth. As China continues to grow larger in Western
consciousness, a basic knowledge of this subject will concurrently
grow in importance for understanding what many already refer to
as “the other superpower.” This course will cover the major
figures, texts, and concepts that have occupied Chinese Confucians
over the centuries, focusing particularly on their answers to the
meaning of life.
