This course presents irreverent, excessive, shocking - written, drawn,
and photographed - ideas of Polish Modernists (Schulz, Gombrowicz, and
Witkacy); literary accounts of World War II experience in verse
(Baczynski) and prose (Nalkowska, Krall); responses to the communist
reality of 1945-89 (Mrozek, Baranczak, Krynicki, Lipska),
autobiographies of Polish intellectuals (Milosz and Gombrowicz); the
lyrical, eternal, earth-shattering poetry by Milosz, Szymborska,
Zagajewski, and Herbert; and voices of contemporary prose writers
(Chwin, Stasiuk, Tokarczuk, Maslowska).
