Above class open to Hutton Honor College Students Only
Above class meets with another section of ANTH-E300

Drawing on recent attention given to global Muslim networks, this
seminar provides an introduction to Muslim thought and practice in
West African societies. Students will come to understand the place of
Sufi Islam, to which the majority of African Muslims belong, within
the wider Muslim world, and in relation to debates over migration and
the nation-state in Europe and the United States. Students will
consider critically the nature of major debates that have arisen over
religion in Africa and its diaspora including: conversion, resistance,
gender, transnational religious movements, diaspora, and the changing
role of the state and civil society.
