Anthropology | Anth of Money, Materiality & Value
E600 | 27390 | Buggenhagen
This seminar offers a critical survey of past and recent debates in
the study of exchange and value in anthropology, to understand its
relevance for research on the politics of sociocultural difference.
Readings range from classical theoretical and ethnographic materials
to recent reformulations that use exchange, and more recently
circulation, to explore the dynamics of history, social reproduction
and power. Topics covered may include the visual and material culture,
commodification, and the production and circulation of cloth and other
objects of value in colonial, post-colonial and global contexts.
Through seminar presentations, and a seminar paper, students will
participate in addressing the central questions
of this course and turn these questions towards their own research.
