Classical Studies | Classical Myth & Culture in Film
C321 | 27474 | Nagle

We will be considering the various ways modern cinema and television
have treated ancient Greek myths. We will view, discuss, and write
about examples from Hollywood feature films, foreign art films,
the “sword and sandal” genre, and animation. Our focus will be on
these films as artistic responses to specific ancient treatments of
the myths, primarily literary versions, but we may consider some
ancient visual treatments to compare with the modern ones. We will,
however, also pay some attention to how these films reflect not only
modern conceptions of and stereotypes about the ancient world but
also the historical and cultural contexts in which they were
produced. (A&H)
