J522 | 11364 | Suzuki, Michiko

This graduate course examines modern Japanese women’s literature
from a broad timeframe (late 19th century to the present). While
focusing on short stories and essays by women, we will also explore
issues of gender criticism, literary style, female representation,
female authorship and the sociohistorical contexts of the selected
literature. We will combine readings in Japanese with critical
material in English; discussion and papers will be in English.
Students will be evaluated on class attendance, discussion
participation, presentations and papers.
