The central aim of this course is to introduce students to both the
history of modern drama and to elements of the genre. The writers we
will read include Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekhov, Samuel
Beckett, Tennessee Williams, Margaret Edson, Cherrie Moraga, and
others, Another aim of the course includes the development of each
student's writing abilities, achieved in part through the writing of
several very short response papers and two fuller essays of 4-6
pages (plus exams). We will make a trip to the IU Theatre to see
Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It.
