This class is an intensive one-semester poetry writing workshop for
graduate students. Students will write poems based on both subject
and form exercises, and learn to develop their own exercises and
writing strategies. We will read contemporary poetry, and discuss
poetics and creativity. Fiction students in the MFA Program are
welcome to take the class, as are graduate students in literature.
Those who are interested in teaching poetry may find the class
useful. No experience in writing poetry is necessary--just a
willingness to read a lot of good books and discover and explore the
art of poetry. Texts will include several books of contemporary
poetry, and perhaps a handbook.
