Teaching Creative Writing

9:30a – 11:30a T

This is a course in the practice of teaching poetry and fiction
writing primarily at the undergraduate level. Through reading and
experience we will explore the creative process as well as the
assumptions and practices unique—and not so unique—to creative
writing classes. Some topics we will consider are invention,
revision, and assessment; craft and content; various approaches to
workshop; the role of reading in a writing life; authority; and
writer-teacher / student-writer dynamics. Work for the course
includes a written analysis and presentation of a writing text; a
teaching journal; developing several annotated writing exercises;
observation visits to creative writing classes; and a syllabus for
an undergraduate creative writing course including a course
description and calendar, an annotated set of exercises, and a
grading policy and its rationale.
