F111 | 3361 | D. McDonald

This course is designed to introduce the student to the various ways
in which music is performed, consumed, and conceptualized in various
cultures around the world. In this class we will study indigenous,
popular, and classical art musics from an ethnomusicological
perspective, highlighting the relationships between music and other
domains of social life such as race, religion/cosmology, language,
gender, politics, and culture. Ultimately, the goal of this class is
to present a cross section of the world’s music cultures so as to
better familiarize the student with music and musical performance
from a cross-cultural perspective.
