Jewish Writing Through the Ages: Bible to Early Modern Literature

In this course, we will read works from a wide variety of historical
periods and genres (biblical narrative, law and poetry;
philosophical traditions; midrash, rabbinic law; mystical literature
and early Hasidic tales). From biblical texts through early modern
writing, we will explore formulations of Hebrew/ Israelite/ Jewish
and religious/ tribal/ national identity through narrative, poetic
and legal traditions as well as more strictly literary questions of
language, form and intertextuality.
