“The art music traditions of India, East Asia, Indonesia, the Islamic
world, western Europe and the Americas all possess and have
preserved their musical history, theory, notation, and core
repertory. This course will study all of the above, including sub-
Saharan music, in context and in comparison with Euro-American music,
and as generative resources for vernacular musics such as popular,
sacred, dance, jazz, and theatrical.”
