Psychology and Brain Sciences | Topics in Psychology: Theoretical & Empirical Foundations of Psychotherapy
P457 | 9645 | Hetrick, W.

This course will focus on a variety of topics related to the
development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based science
and practice. We will begin by addressing the limitations of
clinical judgment, the seduction of pseudoscience, and Freudian
fallacies. In this section of the course, we take on exciting topics
that will help develop critical thinking skills through energized
class discussions. Next we will examine the theoretical foundations
of cognitive behavior therapy and study criteria for determining that
a psychological intervention is in fact empirically supported. The
remainder of the course will be devoted to the clinical practice and
evaluation of evidence-based psychotherapy for major psychological
disorders such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder,
alcoholism, and sexual dysfunctions. These issues and topics will be
explored through readings, class discussions, oral presentations,
written papers, and lectures.
