BULGARIAN LITERATURE, CULTURE AND HISTORY

One of the oldest states in Europe, Bulgaria had its time of glory,
when it challenged the great Byzantine Empire and obtained tribute
from it. This age of magnificence faded quickly and years of grief and
sorrow colored the Bulgarian destiny. Five centuries under the Ottoman
Turks seem to have interrupted the flourishing of culture, literature
and great battle victories. Its meaning as a civilization factor for
the Balkans seems to vanish forever. Yet Great Byzantium disappeared,
the Ottoman Empire shrank, some of the neighbors sunk forever in the
darkness, and Bulgaria remains.
