W.E.B DuBois once stated as “necessary as it is to earn a living, it
is more necessary and important to earn a life.” This course will
introduce the sociological perspective as a tool to analyze the
social world to help earn that life. Sociology is the systematic
study of society that seeks to explain how structure and interaction
shape the behavior of groups of individuals, and how individuals
shape society.
The objectives of this course are to: 1) introduce the discipline of
sociology; 2) provide a broad overview (e.g., key theories and
concepts) of the field; and 3) enable the critical examination of
society with the sociological perspective.
