Have you ever wondered why society operates in a particular
way? Have you ever wondered how society has influenced you or
others? In this course, we will investigate the relationship between
the individual and society using the “sociological imagination,” the
ability to think critically and analytically about the world. The
aim of this course is to introduce students to the field of
sociology, and provide a broad overview of the field. Students will
gain an understanding of social forces that shape our world, as well
as the ways in which people influence society.
Students will be introduced to the various methods and theories
that sociologists use to gain an understanding of society. Using
these tools, we will use the sociological imagination to critically
investigate various topics such as race, class, health, gender,
sexuality, deviance, and religion. We will do this through lecture,
reading, media, as well as discussion.
