Over the last century we have learned many new facts about our
society and more specifically about the average person. We know, for
example, that half of all marriages end in divorce and that most
Americans support the death penalty. We also know that American
students lag behind their peers in other countries and that our
social networks are changing due to technology and the internet. In
this course we will become critical consumers of social statistics
and their presentation in our daily lives. Furthermore, we will
become familiar with the field of Sociology, the production and
interpretation of Social Statistics, and the concepts, measures, and
methods that Sociologists use to understand our society. In short,
this course is an introduction to behind the scene of "fact making."
