This course provides a graduate-level introduction to major issues
in the design of sociological research, and in the collection and
interpretation of data. It covers general issues in research design
(e.g., the role of theory, causal claims, experimental v. non-
experimental strategies, the identification and selection of cases,
measurement, research ethics) as well as issues that pertain to
specific data collection and analysis procedures (e.g., ethnography,
surveys, etc.). By its nature, the course provides an overview of
several topics rather than in-depth coverage of a few.
