Topic: Resisting the Mainstream – The Alternative Body in Cinema.
In an effort to understand what America is, this course examines
citizenship, national identity, and issues of belonging primarily
through representations of its marginalized populations. With a focus
on maternal and queer bodies, we will examine how the
mainstream “norm”
of America is understood and resisted by submovements that struggle
to achieve agency and empowerment in society. The “alternative” body
as studied in this class also includes the illegal, homeless or
imprisoned body. The class will include occasional film screenings
that take place outside of class.
