American Studies | Colloquium in AMST: Latina/o Sexualities in US Literature & Film
G620 | 31427 | Gano

This course explores the development of gender ideals and sexual
stereotypes of Latinas/os across the twentieth century as they are
portrayed in film and literature. We will view films featuring early
stars such as Ramon Novarro, Dolores del Rio, and Lupe Velez as well
as those starring recent celebs J-Lo, Salma Hayek, and Dora the
Explorer. Our reading will include works by John Rechy, Arturo
Islas, Sandra Cisneros, Junot Diaz, Cherrie Moraga, Giannina Braschi,
Cherrie Moraga, and others. Working with Gloria Anzaldua’s
Borderlands/La Frontera at our sides, we will consider whether there
is a relationship between transgressing formal and socio-political
borders in our texts.
