Cultural Studies | Latino/a Sexualities in U.S. Lit and Film
C701 | 31384 | Gano

This course explores the development of gender ideals and stereotypes
of Latinas/os across the twentieth century as they are portrayed in
film and literature. We will view ethnically marked films featuring
early stars such as Ramon Novarro, Dolores de Rio, and Lupe Velez to
recent celebs J-Lo, Salma Hayek, and Dora the Explorer. Additionally,
we will read works by Sandra Cisneros, Junot Diaz, Cherrie Moraga,
Cristina Garcia, Giannina Braschi, and others. Working with Gloria
Anzaldua’s Borderlands/La Frontera at our sides, we will consider
whether there is a relationship between transgressing formal and
socio-political borders in our texts.
