The goal of L202 is to help students develop the necessary critical
skills to enable them to read, interpret, write about, and
appreciate literary texts. To that end, in this class you will be
invited to learn and practice strategies for reading and
interpreting texts of poetry, drama, and fiction that represent a
wide range of historical periods and a variety of literary
conventions and techniques. At the same time, because this section
has been designated as “writing intensive,” you will also receive
instruction in and opportunities to practice strategies for writing
about such texts.

Because much of the work of this course will be carried on through
class discussion and other class activities, your regular attendance
and participation will be required. Also required will be a series
of informal “first pass” writing exercises; four short, formal
papers; unannounced quizzes; and perhaps a final, comprehensive exam.
