American Studies | Topics in Interdisciplinary AMST-Zombies
A350 | 7748 | McGraw

The zombie, a true creation of the Americas, has long served as a
blank screen for the projection of our fears and appetites. From its
origins in Haiti to its global dispersal through Hollywood, this
creature has stumbled through the making of the modern world:
slavery, American imperialism, feminism, mass consumerism, Civil
Rights, the video gaming industry juggernaut, and visions of
epidemiological apocalypse have all served as backdrops (or excuses)
for the undead rising. By reading key texts and, of course, viewing
key films in the zombie genre, we will explore how and why zombies
have entered the zeitgeist. Warning: This course is not for the
faint of heart.
