Classical Studies | Ancient Greek Culure
C101 | ALL | M. Foster

This course will provide a survey of ancient Greek literature,
history, and culture extending from the Bronze Age down to the 4th
century B.C.E. We will examine the ways in which Greek culture is
distinctive and different from our own by examining topics such as
the cultural and political contexts of artistic performance, how the
Greeks both absorbed and rejected aspects of neighboring cultures
(especially Persia), the relation of individual to community, and
representations of women. Key works of literature will be read in
English translation, including selections from Homer, Hesiod, Attic
tragedy and comedy, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plato.
