G407/510 Greek Historians: Herodotus (Prof. Matthew Christ). This
course aims to introduce students to Greek historiography through
close study of Herodotus' Histories. We will seek to understand
Herodotus not only as "the father of history," but also as
ethnographer, scientist, moralist, political analyst, storyteller,
and narrator, and to locate him within his fifth-century intellectual
and cultural milieu. Students will read the entire Histories in
English and excerpts in Greek (approximately 2500 lines) from at
least two books of the Histories.
